With the arrival of spring (fingers crossed!) just around the corner, I'm sure I'm not the only one looking forward to sprucing up my wardrobe and making the most of the change in seasons to breathe some new life into my day-to-day outfits. Whether you're after one key piece to build your capsule spring wardrobe around, or are eagerly anticipating a trip to the shops after a start of year spending ban, look no further as I've put together my guide to SS13 essentials- encompassing my most wanted fashion and beauty buys for the season ahead:
As far as accessories are concerned, I'm definitely more of a bag than a shoe person. Whilst I've got quite a hearty gathering of shoes, the truth of the matter is that most of them are responsible for providing me with some pretty painful blisters, and so have been sadly neglected in favour of a few staple pairs of flats. Whilst they patiently wait for me to invest in some proper plasters, however, my handbag collection has been growing slightly out of control- to the point where most attempts to open my wardobe result in a fair proportion of them dropping on my head. Anyway, I'm determined to make this the year that I downsize my collection, bite the bullet and invest in a proper grown up bag. Of course, something from Mulberry is firmly at the top of my wishlist, and I adore their new season range- in particular the Cecily Tote and the Willow bag, with the pastel shades adding the perfect pop of colour to any outfit. Slightly more affordable is the beautiful Burlington bag from Whistles, which is an instant classic and something which I know I'd get so much use out of. A recent discovery of mine, BoBelle London also have an amazing range of structured designs in some beautiful colours, and the label is defintely one to keep an eye on. And, for something which definitely won't break the bank, this structured satchel from ASOS is the perfect nod to ladylike style for spring. Decisions decisions!
Printed trousers were a huge trend for last spring/summer, and this season they're back with a vengeance. Whilst they might appear pretty intimidating at first, teaming them with a block colour makes them surprisingly easy to pull off, and they're a lovely alternative to jeans when the warmer weather arrives. So far, my printed trouser collection totals only three pairs, but, inspired by the ever-chic Aisling and her love of a snazzy trouser, I'm definitely going to be picking up a few more styles this season. I featured this pair from the Somerset by Alice Temperley collection in a post last month, and they're still firmly at the top of my wishlist, with the pale blue colourway and the ceramic inspired pattern making them perfect for summer at home as well as for traveling. As always, trusty old Topshop also have a really lovely selection of prints to choose from, and both of these pairs offer a lovely nod to the pastel hues seen on the catwalks for this season. Finally, this pair from Oasis are perfect for adding a floral touch to your springtime wardrobe, and the bold botanical print is something which is set to be big news for next season- making these the perfect investment purchase.
Much like printed trousers, neon is another tricky trend which can prove quite intimidating at first glance. Whilst a top-to-toe neon look is definitely not one for the faint hearted, adding a pop of bright accent colour to an outfit is an ideal way to tackle the trend more subtly, and there are plenty of options in the shops at the moment to experiment with. If you're looking to team some neon accents with some wardrobe staples, then look no further than this brilliantly bright blouse from Marks and Spencer- a really directional piece which will see you through many a sunny day. Incorporating bright pops of colour across your accessories for this season is also a really easy way to streamline the trend into your wardrobe, and this clutch bag from Zara is a really directional piece- the perfect way of updating your existing fashion favourites. In much the same way, this vibrant yellow scarf from Whistles is ideal for teaming with some more pared down basics, and a really versatile accessory which could be styled in so many different ways. At the other end of the colour spectrum, why not pick up some cool blue hues in the shape of this necklace from Forever 21 and this amazing pair of slipper shoes from Zara- definite must-buys if you're taking tentative steps towards brightening up your wardrobe.
Isabel Marant's designs are undoubtedly some of SS13's most covetable and her signature bohemian aesthetic has well and truly made a mark on the high street this season. Think vintage paisley prints, oversized shirts and super skinny skinny jeans teamed with an adundance of Gallic attitude and you're well on your way to capturing some Marant magic. As far as replicating this look on the high street goes, look no further than Zara- this season they're stocking pretty printed shirts by the bucket load, and their take on this trend is definitely one of the best on the high street. If you're looking for a more bona fide take on the bohemian look, then definitely shop vintage- this shirt from Rokit captures a really cool, effortless feel, and the bold print is perfect for contrasting with your wardrobe basics. Intricate prints are definitely key to this trend- and this foulard design by Laura Ashley is the perfect nod to patterns which run throughout a lot of Isabel Marant's work, with the collar detail making this an ideal piece for layering too. Prints feature everywhere across this trend- so be sure to pick up some bold accessories like this scarf from Anthropologie and this Paisley design watch from Olivia Burton, before topping your look off with a statement pair of ankle boots- this suede pair from ASOS are perfect.
A fresh faced, natural approach to beauty is definitely the order of the season. Tom Ford's new Lip Colour Shine range offers an array of pretty pinks and cool corals for an effortless look, and the high-shine moisturising finish is ideal for finishing off the perfect summer face. For flawless, dewy skin, look no further than Stila's One Step Correct Primer and Burberry's Warm Glow Natural Bronzer teamed with their Light Glow Natural Blush for a pretty, undone complexion. Eye wise, the And God Created The Woman palette by NARS (which I posted about here) is a real new season must have- with six beautiful neutral shades it's definitely a travel essential, perfect for the daytime and easily buildable for a more defined evening eye. If you're looking for a bright pop of colour, then Essie's glide on nail polishes are ideal- Maximillian Strasse-Her and Bond With Whomever are perfectly pretty spring sorbet shades, erring just enough on the subtle side to tie in to this season's trend for neutral nails. For something slightly bolder, OPI's Suzi's Hungary Again and Can't Find My Czechbook from their new Euro Centrale Collection are definitely wishlist worthy- and wonderfully appropriate if you're planning a Continental summer break!
