So now that September has arrived, it seems, as always, that there's a palpable 'back to school' feeling in the air. Having left school myself seven years ago (scary times!), I sadly don't get to partake in the start of term ritual of buying a new pencil case and a snazzy set of highlighters, but during my time at college, university and even now in the grown up world, September still brings with it a real sense of renewal and change. It's perhaps no surprise that as I've grown older my new season interests have veered away from gel pens and fluorescent Post-Its to coats, bags and other autumn essentials. With a bounty of pieces arriving in the shops every week, it can be a little overwhelming when knowing what to buy and where to invest your hard earned pennies, so whether you're heading back to the classroom, lecture theatre or are just looking for some fresh day-to-day wardrobe inspiration, I've put together a little edit of some of my favourite new season essentials:
Riley Trench Coat, £155, Whistles (via John Lewis)/Like Jumper, £78, Just Female/Elizabeth and James Spring Glasses, £120.72, Shopbop/Mr. Boddington's Penguin Classics Wuthering Heights, £9.99, Anthropologie/Spiral Ring, £12, COS/Mix & Match Print Tee, £32, Miss Selfridge/Chelsea Boots with Metal Hardware, £75, Miss KG (via ASOS).
I've had my eye on this trench coat from Whistles for what feels like absolutely forever and I'm seriously tempted to treat myself to it sooner rather than later. As far as wardrobe classics go, it's pretty much perfect and it's a guaranteed investment piece too; I also love how the collar detail adds a really modern edge. Just Female is a brand which I've only recently discovered, and I've already fallen in love with about 90% of the pieces on their website. This jumper is perfect for channeling some minimalist Scandinavian cool, and the block colours also make it really versatile for styling in so many different ways. The arrival of September usually means a trip to the Optician for me, and I'm certain that I'll be needing a new glasses prescription when I finally pluck up the courage to make an appointment. These frames from Elizabeth and James are just the sort of simple style which I usually tend to go for as they're effortlessly easy to wear yet still really chic.
When I was studying for my English Lit & Language A-Level, Wuthering Heights was required reading. Whilst I can't promise that this Penguin Classics edition from Anthropologie (which I spotted at their last press day) will prove any less bleak than it was when I read it, the beautifully vibrant cover certainly proves a nice distraction from the windswept vistas and tumultuous tempers of the main characters! This ring from COS is another piece which is firmly at the top of my wishlist- it's lovely and simple and the perfect standalone accessory to team with a lot of staples. This blouse from Miss Selfridge is a real new season favourite too, and more than a little Preen-esque. It ticks so many trend boxes at the same time- monochrome, check print, polka dot, collar detail- making it a real steadfast update to your wardrobe for the new season. Finally, now that winter is coming (got to love a token GoT reference, eh?), investing in a sturdy pair of boots is a super wise move. Last year I more or less lived in my Chelsea boots from Topshop, and this season I'm on the lookout for a pair with a little more hardware detailing. These ones from Miss KG are really solid and a definite basic buy if the weather is going to take a more unpredictable turn.
