I think it's fair to say that one of the biggest style stories for SS15 is 70s chic. In the midst of a fashion flashback and with the return of Poldark to Sunday night telly (yes please!), it seems that our collective nostalgia for the era has reached something of a pinnacle, and you only have to saunter down the high street to notice an abundance of 70s inspired style staples taking over the shops. Whether you're feeling flares, bohemian prints or off the shoulder chic, there are plenty of potential wardrobe investments to take your fancy- so here's a little look at a selection of some of my current favourites:
Daisy Print Shirt Dress, £55, Topshop/Piper Trousers, £30, Monki/Camel Felt Fedora, £25, Miss Selfridge/Printed Shirt Dress, £89, Boden/Cat Eye Sunglasses, £10, River Island/Orla Bella Shoes, £100, Clarks/70s Blouse, £25, Rokit/Messenger Bag, £29.99, Zara
This dress from Topshop ticks plenty of new season boxes, and is a piece which I think would rapidly become a perennial favourite too. The print is perfect for tapping into a distinct 1970s style without being too in-your-face, so is something well worth investing in for spring. As far as denim goes, flares are a huge fashion story at the moment, but I'm not 100% convinced on the practicality- particularly as I struggle not to trip over at the best of times! These jeans from Monki are the ideal halfway house, with the slightly higher rise tapping into a more retro aesthetic without the peril of being sent flying when you're legging it for the Tube.
Anyone who knows me well will tell you that I have notorious problems with finding hats which fit, but this design from Miss Selfridge is simply too good to ignore- the camel hue makes it an ideal transitional staple and a real essential in the making. Regular readers will also know that I'm a huge fan of Boden, and this gorgeous dress has been on my radar for a little while now- needless to say I'm well and truly sold on the print. If you're looking to update some existing favourites with a peppering of 70s chic, then you can't go far wrong with these super stylish cat eye sunglasses from River Island- they are firmly fixed on my new season shopping list.
If you're after some 70s originals, investing in some vintage gems is definitely the way to go. Plenty of my favourite printed pieces are vintage, and having a rummage though the rails is a great way to get your hands on some real one offs, like this ultra jazzy blouse from Rokit. Speaking of print, I'm seriously coveting these shoes from Orla Kiely's latest Clarks range, and they tie in perfectly with the new season penchant for pretty patterns (plus the low heel gets a huge thumbs up from me!) Finally, it's rare that I can resist a good bag, and this small yet perfectly formed piece from Zara is s definite spring spend in waiting.
Are you a fan of 70s chic?
