After a whistle-stop tour of our long weekend in Morocco via Instagram, I'm back with a little bit more about where we stayed. A full (and inevitably picture heavy!) travel diary is on the way too, so do keep your eyes peeled for that going live over the next few days. Meanwhile, I'm here with a little peek through the keyhole at our home for the duration of our stay- the beautiful Dar Lazuli riad:

Nestled away down a quiet street merely a stone's throw away from Essaouira's utopian sandy beaches is Dar Lazuli, a riad which is over 200 years old. With an open roof and inward facing courtyard, it's the perfect example of traditional Moroccan architecture, complete with a fountain on the ground floor and a series of sprawling sun terraces which dominate the upper levels. The property is divided into four separate apartments, each with a blissful waterfall shower, fully equipped kitchen and wood burning fireplace. My home away from home was the beautiful Ghibli suite, nestled away at the top of the riad- affording me the perfect starlit sojourn to sleep each evening and a blissful glimpse of the sunshine rising each morning. For me, the crowning glory of this apartment was the bed- absolutely enormous, it could have easily accommodated another 4 of me! Not only was it blissful to have so much space, but the bed was by far and away the most comfortable I have ever slept in, complete with feather soft down pillows, duvet and woven blanket to keep the chilly Moroccan evening air at bay.

The heritage and history of Essaouira as a bustling coastal town is carried through across Dar Lazuli, with crisp white walls sitting in perfect contrast to vivid aquamarine and blue hues, and accent accessories such as shells and driftwood pieces all evoking the beautiful seaside surroundings. Inspired by traditional elements of Moroccan design, Dar Lazuli feels modern, light and extremely homely, and is filled with life, vibrancy and colour. The terraces were perfect for enjoying a sun-soaked lunch on (couscous of course!), and during the evenings we retired to the sitting room downstairs for plenty of gossiping and relaxation time. Conveniently located only a short walk from the bustling shops and main square, as well as being mere minutes away from the beach, Dar Lazuli was the perfect base for our stay. Residing here, we were afforded a really lovely insight into traditional Souri life in the company of our wonderful housekeepers, Rachid & Latifa, who were around to help with anything we needed, and our lovely night guard Abdelkader who was on site in the evenings to make us all feel safe. I honestly couldn't recommend getting away from it all at Dar Lazuli enough.

*Our stay at Dar Lazuli and transfers were complimentary, but flights, food and other sundries were paid for by us. As ever, my opinions and impressions are 100% honest.

Safe to say there was lots of lovely food, and plenty of reading, as well as lots of glorious sunshine!

Do you take a lot of photos when you go on holiday?

14.09.2012- Holiday Snaps

As much as I love sitting on the beach with a good book when I'm away, sometimes it's nice to have a break and do something different. So, midway through the first week I was away, I went on a walk into the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountain range. I vaguely remembered following a really picturesque trail along the same route when I was much younger, so this year made a point of trying to find it again and exploring a little bit more. I was lovely to see so many beautiful wild flowers, tall trees and greenery, all of course bathed in glorious sunshine:

Blouse- Derhy
Shorts- Clothing at Tesco
Flip Flops- Primark
Sunglasses- Marks and Spencer
Hat- Local supermarket

This blouse is a fairly recent addition to my wardrobe, bought from French retailer Derhy. I stumbled across their online shop after finding their SS12 brochure concealed in the pages of Elle, and as soon as I saw this blouse I fell in love. The intricate embroidered details are beautiful and it really is an instant wardrobe classic- the sort of simple basic which can be styled in so many different ways. It's lovely and lightweight too, so was perfect for popping in my suitcase. For this particular adventure, I wore it with a pair of denim shorts from Tesco- a bargain at only £15! I got so much wear out of these on holiday, so I'm sure they will be making a few appearances across this series of posts. The sunhat, as ridiculous as it is, was something I had to buy once I'd taken off, as I very neglectfully left my own at home! Proof that no matter how many lists you make, you're always bound to forget something when you go away!

Have you discovered any new shops recently? And what sort of pieces do you pack when you go on holiday?

23.07.2012- What I Wore On Holiday #3

As I mentioned in this post, I've got a staple collection of swimwear which I tend to stick to when I go away- pieces I've picked up here and there which I know are beach fail-safes. This year, I searched high and low for some new swimwear to take away with me, but really struggled to find flattering, practical pieces that didn't cost the earth. So, when I spied this vintage inspired bikini a few months ago, I hastily snapped it up:

Bikini- Monki
Sunglasses- Marks and Spencer
Flip Flops- Primark

When Monki opened over here at the start of the year, I was really impressed by the simplicity of their pieces. After picking up some of their lovely knits, I never really considered shopping there for swimwear, but after seeing this bikini in their magazine I knew it was just the thing I was after. I love the vintage inspired shape, and the simple design is really practical. A pair of bargain flip flops from Primark and my retro style sunglasses from Marks and Spencer completed my day two beach outfit!

What do you look for in swimwear when you go away? And where have you picked up your favourite beach pieces?

22.07.2012- What I Wore On Holiday #2

So I'm back from my holiday! I had a lovely time, read plenty of books and did lots of swimming (as well as a mountain hike...but more on that to come!) I'm working on a post of some holiday photos to show you what I got up to, but I thought I'd also put together a series of outfit posts showing you some of what I wore on holiday, as I seem to have accumulated a fair few snaps. I also picked up a few new bits and pieces before I went away (some might call it panic buying...!), so thought this would be the perfect way to show you some recent additions to my wardrobe. Here's my outfit from day one:

Beach dress- Topshop
Bikini (just seen)- Monki
Basket- Cath Kidston
Sunglasses- Marks and Spencer

I wore this on the first day I spent at the beach as I'm extremely prone to sunburn! I spied this beach dress in Topshop at the beginning of the summer (if we can call it that with the weather so awful at the moment!), and picked it up a few weeks before I went away. It was ideal for wearing to the beach, and I really love the watercolour effect- how pretty are the colours? The basket was something I bought in the Cath Kidston sale, and it was perfect for fitting all of my seaside essentials in, but I also think it will be great to use here when the weather perks up. Finally, I tried this hairstyle after seeing it in Look and on Pintrest, and I don't think it turned out that badly considering it was a first attempt. It's actually surprisingly easy to do, and ideal for keeping your locks tangle free if you're going away on a beach holiday.

What are your beach essentials? And do you impulse buy before you go away?

19.07.2012- What I Wore On Holiday #1

As promised, here are some photographs from my holiday. I stayed in a tiny Spanish village about an hour and a half away from Mรกlaga Airport, and spent most of the two weeks I was there relaxing in the sunshine, catching up on some good reading and swimming. I haven't had a beach holiday for five years, so it was really lovely to have a really relaxing time and change of scenery.

Beautiful Hibiscus flowers were planted all around the village, in gorgeous pinks, corals, blues and whites.

Myself on the beach on day one of the holiday, hence the lack of tan!

View of the sunset from the balcony of the apartment.

Myself on the beach (again!)

The view of the village from the top of a mountain.

Shadows of roses growing along a residential street.

A traditional Spanish townhouse situated along the main road of the village, it had the biggest garden, with a palm tree and a water well.  I can only imagine how beautiful it would be on the inside, and it would be a lovely place to live, as the rear garden faces the seafront.

The swimming pool.

Beautiful palm trees growing all along the seafront.

Me on the beach when the waves were very fierce!

The waves coming in over the sand.

A wave breaking on the beach.

Overall it was a really lovely holiday, and I am already missing the sunshine.

Are you off anywhere exciting this summer? Where is your dream holiday location?

21.07.2010- Holiday Snaps

I got back from my holiday yesterday, after a really relaxing break. I've still got a mountain of unpacking to do, but couldn't resist posting this editorial from US Harper's Bazaar, featuring Jessica Stam. Shot by Alexi Lubomirski, the shoot is entitled Spanish Revival and, looking through it, I quite want to go back to the Spanish sunshine myself!

I really love the vibrancy of this shoot; you can just feel the sunshine seeping through the pictures. I hope to get some of my holiday photos up here soon, just as soon as I get my case unpacked!

19.07.2010- Buenos Dias!

Just a quick little post to say that as of tomorrow I'm off on holiday for two weeks, so won't be posting for a while. Hope to return rested, relaxed and with a tan (although I have a feeling I may just go a lovely shade of lobster like always!) Will get back to blogging as soon as I can when I get back, hopefully with lots of holiday photos to share.
